BRUNSWICK, OH- Since the 1800s, the concept of a mascot has floated around professional sports, states the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Costumed mascots have become so popular since that a Mascot Hall of Fame is currently being built in Indiana, according to the museum itself. With all of the fanfare surrounding them, it could be argued that mascots are an integral part of the in-game, and all-around sports experience.

Few teams in each major American league though, currently do not have a costumed character representing their team, including hockey’s Detroit Red Wings, baseball’s New York Yankees, and football’s Green Bay Packers and New York Jets. The Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL) used to be one of these mascot-less teams, until September 24th when the team’s new mascot “Gritty” debuted.

Gritty was brought to life at a special conference at the Please Touch Museum in Pennsylvania. Over 600 local elementary students joined him at the event, states CBS Philly.

“We are proud to introduce Gritty and welcome a full-time mascot program to our community engagement initiatives,” stated the Flyers’ chief operating officer (C.O.O).

According to the team, Gritty is the product of years of work developing a mascot. The character, standing at seven feet tall, is not defined as a particular animal, but is a sort of monster-like creature, similar to the Philly Phanatic. So where does the name, “Gritty”, come from?

“We actually worked with an agency and spent almost two years developing the mascot. But the word gritty really resounded with everyone,” the C.O.O. Shawn Tilger stated.

Despite the years of work leading up to Gritty, not everyone is a fan.

“I’m afraid to make fun of Gritty because that is the face of a mascot who has killed a man and will do it again,” wrote Twitter user @rivs_are_rollin.

The NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) also commented on Twitter; a blunt “lol ok” from the Penguins was all it took for Gritty (@GrittyNHL) to fire back:

“Sleep with one eye open tonight, bird.”

With all of the social media commentary surrounding him, Gritty has become the topic of many memes, including an Upper Deck card, and a mock presidential campaign featuring the hashtag “MakeAmericaGritAgain”.

The Antifa movement also adopted Gritty as their own, using the mascot’s image at a recent Trump rally in Philadelphia, states the Wall Street Journal. The Flyers have emphasized Gritty’s now “active role in embracing the Flyers community outreach initiatives”, but the appearance at this rally was only on a poster, and was not a team-affiliated event.

Just beginning his mascot career, Gritty is already a noteworthy character. Despite commentary from the hockey community, Gritty is sure to be a mascot to watch as he continues his antics, community appearances, and late night show features. Surely, Gritty has Flyers fans wondering what they ever did without him.
